Bayern Munich have completed a shock two-year loan deal for Real Madrid star James Rodriguez. The Colombian was linked with Manchester United and Chelsea earlier this summer but Bayern have stolen ahead of them.
Bayern have the option to sign the player on a permanent deal once his loan expires. It is believed the German champions will pay Real around €5million per year for the loan, with the option to buy him for just over €35m in 2019. He joined Real in 2014 in a £71million deal after shining for Colombia in the World Cup.
But Rodriguez grew frustrated with his role at the Bernabeu under Zinedine Zidane last term. The 25-year-old made 22 appearances in La Liga and wasn't included in the squad for the Champions League final.
"We are very happy that we were able to complete this transfer. The signing of James Rodriguez was a big wish for Carlo Ancelotti, having worked successfully together at Real Madrid," Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said. "He is a versatile player. With this transfer, we have been able to raise the quality of our team."
United were offered the chance to sign Rodriguez a year ago but rejected the opportunity. The player wanted his future sorted ahead of the new season and he has now got his wish.
